February 2, 1913 – American poet Joyce Kilmer writes his famous poem “Trees” in Mahwah,
New Jersey. In World War One, he was killed by a sniper’s bullet at the Second Battle of the
Marne in 1918 at the age of 31. (He has a rest stop named for him on the NJ Turnpike.)
