October 25, 1962 – The Cuban Missile Crisis – The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was a
direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the
Cold War and was the moment when the two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict.
Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev ordered the construction of nuclear missiles on the island of
Cuba, just 90 miles from American soil. President John Kennedy ordered a naval quarantine of
Cuba and three days’ of negotiations resulted in the deconstruction of the missiles and the April
1963 removal of American missiles from Turkey
