On This Date May 6,1937- the Hindenberg disaster at Lakehurst
May 6, 1937 – the German airship Hindenburg exploded over Lakehurst Naval Air Base while
landing after an Atlantic crossing. A total of 13 passengers, 22 crewmen and one member of the
ground crew were killed; recent investigations point to the ignition of the airship’s outer coating
by static electricity as the likely cause of the disaster
