On This Date May 4,1904-construction of the Panama Canal begins

May 4, 1904 – the United States begins construction of the Panama Canal. George Washington
Goethals , an Army General and civil engineer, administers and supervises the construction and
the opening of the canal. He was the State Engineer for New Jersey, and the Goethals Bridge,
connecting New Jersey and Staten Island, is named in his honor.
