On This Date May 30,1868- Decoration Day observed for the first time

May 30, 1868 – Decoration Day, the predecessor of today’s Memorial Day, is observed in the
United States for the first time. Meant to be a way to remember and honor those who died in the
American Civil War, it has since become an opportunity to remember all those who have served
in the United States Armed Forces and now rest from their labors.
