On This Date May 22,1958- Eight Nike Missiles explode

May 22, 1958 – Eight fully-armed Nike missiles exploded at the U.S. Army base in Leonardo,
Middletown Township, Monmouth County NJ. An investigation later showed that a single missile exploded, setting off a
chain reaction, killing six soldiers and four civilians. Windows were shattered and doors blown in
a mile or more from the explosion scene and live ordinance was scattered across a wide area.
