June 28, 1778 – the American Continentals engage the British in the Battle of Monmouth
Courthouse resulting in a standstill and British withdrawal to New York via Sandy Hook under
the cover of darkness. It was the last battle of the Philadelphia campaign (begun the year
before). It was also the battle that created the legend of Molly Pitcher, an amalgam of more than
one woman seen on the battlefield that day, bringing refreshing water to the embattled American
troops.
