On This Date- February 23,1945 the American Flag was raised on Iwo Jima

February 23, 1945 – In the waning days of World War Two, the American flag was raised on Iwo
Jima. After invading the island on February 19th, the Marines were victorious in defeating the
Japanese troops stationed there. Six United States Marines raised a U.S. flag atop Mount
Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The iconic photograph of this event was first published
in Sunday newspapers on February 25, 1945. The photo became the inspiration for the Marine
Corps War Memorial, located near the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial
was dedicated in 1954
