December 22, 1776 – The Battle of Iron Works Hill began in Mount Holly, NJ. This was a series
of minor skirmishes that took place between an American force mostly composed of colonial
militia under Colonel Samuel Griffin and a force of 2,000 Hessians and British regulars under
Colonel Carl von Donop. The two day battle was inconclusive, but it did prevent the British
troops from being sent to Trenton, thereby allowing Washington’s surprise attack on the British
positions on the banks of the Delaware River
