August 9, 1974 – Richard Nixon resigns as US President and VP Gerald Ford (appointed after
the resignation of VP Spiro Agnew) swears the oath of office to take his place as the 38th US
President. Gerald Ford remains the only man to serve as president who did not achieve the
position by election.
