On This Date August 29,1758- First reservation created in Shamong, NJ
August 29, 1758 – the New Jersey Legislature created the first Indian reservation on the
Brotherton Tract in Shamong Township. This was the colonies’ first attempt at creating a
reservation for Native Americans. The community of Delaware Indians did not last very long.
The remnants of the tribe were eventually removed to Western reservations and reservation’s
church was utilized by white residents until it burned down in 1802
