August 24, 1814 – War of 1812: British forces capture Washington, D.C. and destroy many
landmarks. Although they set fire to the Executive Mansion (today’s White House), First Lady
Dolly Madison is able to rescue the Gilbert Stuart life size portrait of George Washington.
