On This Date April 9,1865- the end of the American Civil War

April 9, 1865 – Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses Grant at
Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This ends the American Civil War. It is estimated that
620,000 to 750,000 soldiers died in the war, along with countless numbers of citizens. It remains
the deadliest war in American history
