December 23, 1783 – Two “Washington” events: US General George Washington resigns his
military commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Army to Congress, and, five years later,
Maryland cedes 10 square miles of land to become the nation’s capital, the District of Columbia,
AKA Washington, DC.
