On This Date July 8,1776- First public readings of the Declaration of Independence

July 8, 1776 – Church bells (possibly including the Liberty Bell) are rung after John Nixon
delivers the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. (Yes,
he was an ancestor of Richard Nixon.) Another one of the first public readings occurs in
Trenton, NJ
