On This Date July 5, 1776 & 1778- US makes its first land purchase, and British Troops leave NJ

July 5, 1776 – the United States makes its first land purchase of a 100 acre plot of land in what
is now the Billingsport section of Paulsboro.
July 5, 1778 – British troops evacuate New Jersey at Sandy Hook, from where they are
transported by ships to New York City.
